Good question!! I can only guess that it is because they have somehow convinced people that they are the only party that cares about religion (specifically Christianity) and religion is very important to Southerners. Of course, the irony here is that there is nothing more Christian then loving your neighbor and helping those in need, both alien concepts to the Republican Party.

Because of the Civil Rights Act.

When President Johnson (demo) signed the Act into law he said with this signature we loose the Southern vote.

Before Civil Rights the South was 99% Democratic. But their disdain for people of color spurred a party change that has lasted 30 years. Johny Reb would rather vote for the "Man" than be part of the political party that brought about Civil Rights.

It's because the Democratic party has become too liberal.

Mainstream blue-collar America does not believe in all the radical left issues, so they drift towards the Republican party.

The Democrats need to moderate their stance if they want the vote of blue-collar America.

The other option would be to toss out the electoral college. Then, other party candidates besides Democrat and Republican might actually have a chance of getting elected.

Ignorance and bigotry

Only a thoroughly uneducated or bigoted person could think that today's moderate Democrats are too liberal or that our fascist government needs to move farther to the right, so the KKK and other fanatics in the south gravitate to the extremism of neoconservatives.

Then there are the southern Baptists and other religious groups who naively buy into Bush's phony "Christianity". The man is such a hypocrite he'd pretend to be a Muslim or a Buddhist if it suited his political goals.

The Republicans play the South like an old fiddle. They trot out Rush and Coulter and all the hatemongers . . . they prey on the gullibility of conservative bigots against gays, minorities, women, abortion, whatever. It's a divide and conquer game, with lots of distraction thrown in.

Get people all riled up about gay marriage, they have no time to notice that their jobs have been outsourced by Republican-led companies with Republican-made subsidies) to India and China.

Religion. If it were lack of education, Republicans would have a major minority draw, with the way inner city schools are right now.

Because they do NOT believe the government is the answer to all problems. Maybe the question should be why the blue states like socialism.

Because they hate blacks, gays and anyone who isn't a Jesus-Freak. So Republicans scare them every couple of years with campaigns like, "If you don't vote for me, a gay black atheist will move in next door!" and the South and Mid-West get's angry and scared. We should let them secede.
