The first answer is a best answer material, however I just want to put my 2 cents in.
I trust everyone no matter what they have done to me in the past. I am just that way. My excuse for it is that I follow Jesus's footsteps. I know this is not a religious question; however I just wanted you to know where I'm coming from.
See to me I will do what ever i can for others and will love everybody always. I am often called a doormat, however this does not offend me, because i know it to be true.
As for cheating and such; I love my wife so much that if she ever did cheat on me I would forgive her very fast. In these type of situations it's all about the love. See if you love somebody with your whole heart there is nothing he/she could really ever do to make you stop loving them. I have seen many relationships like this: Where one of them cheats and the other forgives very fast because they love them so much that they can not really live without that person.
I hope this helps.

trusting people cannot help who they are just like the people who take advantage cannot help what they do . It matters not to a trusting person who they trust or they would not be know as trusting people .
The question we have to ask is why are there so many people out there that will take advantage of them .

Insecurity and hatred will eat you up inside for sure.
Alas some people can not process/rationalize their own insecurity therefore it manifests its self in different ways ie: jealousy. Time heals all wounds unfortunately most people do not give themselves an appropriate amount of time between relationship to heal.
I have answered your question in a round-about way.
summary: If you spend the rest of your life judging others by what ONE idiot has done.........

A lot of the time it has nothing to do with trust. It is about dependency.

Some people need to believe in certain things like love, truth, and what have you....
Some people are just a glutton for punishment.
Some people love playing the tragic drama queen.

Perhaps because they trust in their own ability to survive betrayal, and perhaps because they no longer invest more than they can afford to lose if the **** hits the fan.

I'd say it's somewhere in the realms of what "button21" and "scared2fly" said. Necessity is the mother of invention. Be careful of what you THINK you need, or who you need.

That's a DAMN good question...because we want so bad to believe that people can change from what they are into what we want the to be. some one we could try and love. heck, sometime we will lie to ourselves to try to believe it.
