I've tried when it prompts to "save" I click save, then turn it off and it doesn't save my games.

The probelm is the battery inside the game has died. Nintedeo used to raplce batterys for 10$, and they still do for gameboys but im not sure about super nintedo's.

Like the batter on your motherboard, it stores some small interformation that channges.

You can guy a new replacment abttery yourself(any 3.3 pancake type battery will do)

then you need to unscrew it( with a 3.8MM secuirty bit) unsolider the old battery, and solider a new one in. Its a pin in the nbeck but i have done it many times and it works.

Beat the first level then save and check if not buy a new SNES or SMW
