I think you need to hire a manager, get a band with background singers, and write some songs. It's okay to do your own renditions. Practice makes perfect. Then make a demo tape to send to
record producers and agents. All bands start out in the garage and go to clubs and bars and any other place to start gigs. (Don't quit your day job, if it doesn't turn out.) Most bands gets noticed within a couple of years. They used to be Battle of the Bands on TV, but not any more. So find some contests and sign up if you have the money. If you write your own songs, get them copyrighted with ASCAP, Writer's Guide of America, and the US Copyright Office. Also get Writer's Digest 2007 issue of Songwriter's Market. It also depends on what music. I know that there's usually a songwriting contest for country music in Nashville. There's always American Idol. They're still auditioning for singers. See if there's a local auditioning town near you, if not in your state. Good luck. Maybe this'll give me 10 points! ;-)

MySpace Music is definitely a common means to get your stuff heard lately. Once you have your site set-up, you go to artists with similar styles, or who are influences of yours, and ask them to add you to their "friends" list. Then you just go back to all those sites with comments and photos, so that other people will hit the link back to your page.
You've gotta keep getting your music out there - whether it's online, live gigs, "open mic"-type events. Cut a demo and send it to every one who might know someone in the industry. That's the "old school" way.
