Metaphorically speaking "nail in the coffin" means the final act that seals one's fate. Often you hear the phrase "that was the nail in the coffin for that company", which means that an event or action made the outcome for the company inevitable. Usually used to describe an action that leads to a bad outcome.

The phrase comes from modern england. It is the last thing after checking to see if the person was dead they would do before burial sometimes during the plague they would pound the nail in 3/4 of the way to allow the dead if buried alive to get out of the coffin.

the expression is "the last nail in the coffin" is a euphemism for something ending because it could bear no more like the "straw that broke the camel's back." I'll give you an example, after finding many women's phone numbers in her husbands pants pockets over many months (and him denying his cheating), the "last nail in the coffin" was when she finally found the receipt for the no-tell motel of the next town in his pants pocket.

something or someone is coming to an end by means of small steps. each step is a "nail in the coffin".
example: i was hopeful that my baseball team would make the playoffs. then we traded our best pitcher, then our SS got hurt, then out coach was arrested. now we have no chance of making playoffs. each event was a "nail in the coffin".

heading toward death. Final nail in the coffin and you are dead. Same as one foot in the grave. Means you are getting close to being dead.

It could mean the "Final Straw" or it could mean "It's your coffin" (life)..."so seal your own fate" (implying that you are about to make a bad move).

Much like "The last straw that broke the camels back". The defining moment that preceded a destructive or unhappy event.
