First, I don't believe that any genetic 'marker' for homosexuality has yet been identified. It may, in fact, be due to a different balance of hormones either permanently or merely at a critical stage of development.
Humans are very complicated beings and much more than sex determines our survival. It may be that a particular mental trait which also happens to be associated with a preference for same-sex partners is a key factor in the role that certain people have to play in society. At the moment, perhaps, that is occluded because of the stigma which is still attached to homosexuality but we can clearly see that stigma dropping away.
Think of the complicated society in a beehive. In each hive there is only one fertile queen and a small number of male bees. The rest are workers (actually infertile females) and each has a different role to play. These roles are established, one gathers, not by genetics but by different feeding patterns and different foods. Depending on the needs of the colony, the eggs laid by the queen may become whatever the colony has a need for - honey gatherers, soldiers, air conditioners or wax builders.
It may be that human society has a similar mechanism and that certain social stimuli tend to produce individuals with different ways of thinking and different sensibilities. It would be myopic to say that, because we cannot see their purpose, they therefore do not have one.

Actually, homosexuality may well be beneficial to the survival of the human race.
At the population level, the planet, or any given region, can only support so many people. Having sexual relations with someone of the same gender means you get your sexual pleasure without producing kids you can't feed. There are certain species of animals that will actually exhibit homosexual behavior only when certain resources are in support supply.
At the individual level, the biological "goal" of any living organism is to produce offspring that reach sexual maturity and pass their genes on to another generation. People don't always have the resources to support another child, and having another child would decrease the chances of survival of their other child. Getting sexual pleasure with someone you're not able to have a child with avoids this problem. Of course, this isn't generally the case in modern advanced societies, but on an evolutionary time scale it certain has been a major factor, and in may places it still is. In certain Ancient Greek cultures, it was customary for people to engage in sexual relations with people of their same gender before they were ready to marry, limiting the chances of children being born to unwed couples.
Therefore, homosexuality is not a "genetic illness," but rather a natural, and quite possibly necessary variation. The "cause" of homosexuality is not yet know, but if it were determined to be genetic, there would be no reason it should be "fixed." Also, it's unlikely that stem cells would be used to correct genetic defects; it is far more likely that this would be done with a modified virus of sorts, or a novel delivery system that has yet to be discovered.

Should people with a talent to run faster than anyone else be "fixed" because not many can or want to do this? Should people with a desire to paint be "fixed" because this doesn't serve a purpose of collecting food? Should people be forced not to have sex past their childbearing years because they can no long procreate? All of these variations are what makes us human. There is nothing wrong with homosexuals.
