Mostly those issues have to do with whether you're conservative or liberal. The basic difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Democrats are (mostly) for a larger government, while Republicans are (mostly) for a smaller government.
It's kind of like the old adage about giving a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he'll be fed for life. Republicans prefer to teach the man to fish.

It makes you YOU.

You CHOOSE to be a part of a political party. You don't have to believe - or be - everything they are. You typically choose by which one you agree with the most. I highly doubt that there are a lot of either that believe as the party does 100 %.

Besides, you could choose to be an independent, too. Pick the one that BEST represents your point of view.

And "farkas": Republicans are for more government involvement in individuals' lives. They want the government to control more of everyone's lives as opposed to allowing people to do their own thing.

The proper thing is Republicans are typically more conservative on issues, while Democrats tend to be more liberal. Look at their "platforms" and see which best represents your thoughts on the issues.

No to both questions. Islamist also believe in death penalty, so you might as well be a muslim fundamentalist. Union membership might as well entitle you to some seat in the Communist International circle, and as a native... you'd better go and join some green party.
Plenty of options. Isn't democracy a real blessing?
