Tell him you have a problem as soon as you can and have plan for catching up. If you signed a contract, your contract may spell what happens if you don't make a payment. Your lawyer probably wants to keep you as a client so he may be pretty agreeable to your plan.
It's not fair to expect your attorney to work for free or to let him do the work when you know you can't pay --- that's stealing and you will probably be referred to collection.

Call his office and let him know that you fully intend to keep paying, that you're extremely tight with money this month. If you can even make a $10 or $20 payment this month, at least it would show good faith on your part.
If a client doesn't pay his lawyer, the lawyer can, depending on the type of case and how far it has proceeded, file a motion with the court requesting that the Court allow him to withdraw as counsel of record for the non-paying client.
Most lawyers will work with you if you are up front and honest and level with them, and keep paying SOMETHING every month.

A lawyer can drop the case if you don't pay him/her but most don't leave their clients in the lurch if there is genuine hardship. Many Lawyers take on Pro Bono work which is no fee. If you haven't got the funds discuss it with your lawyer, it would be unlikely that he will drop your case if he will eventaully get paid or he knows your situation.
All the best.

Talk to him and work something out. I think if you are up front with him, he will work with you. If you just don't pay him, he may have the right to refuse to continue to work on your case.

Read your contract. I would guess that the answer is yes. No one is going to work for free-especially not an attorney.

He can stop working on it, till you start paying again, but many times if you talk to him and try and work it out, they will.
