Originally, when movies had two features, there was the "A" feature andf the "B" feature.
The "A" feature had the stars and the money ofr a high-class production.
The "B" feature was like a training ground for new directors, new writers and new actors. (When studios had contract players, they were making films all the time)
Some could graduate through the ranks; others just didn't have what it took to move up.
You can think of it like playing baseball in the Major league and playing baseball for a Triple-A club

A really good mixture of action, comedy, love and drama! like Pirates of the Caribbean(both), all the Lord of the Rings movies and all the Harry Potter movies, and all other movies with Johnny Depp! Johnny picks movies with a nice mix of all three! See the Libertine and Chocolat as well as From Hell

Cheap production, usually not first rank stars. Things like monster movies, the old cowboy flicks, & such. Could be concidered a way for lesser known directors or producers to become known.

I think it's money basically - how much is spent on making the movie and it's publicity - that's why there are so many movies these days that go straight to video (or DVD).

Low budget, contrived and predictable plot, monsters that aren't really scary, cheesy special effects, sterotypical characters, and lots of screaming women.
