It entirely depends on what species your turtle is. Every species has very distinct requirements: the amount of land and water, temperature of both water and air, basking areas, underwater furnishings, plants, and the big one: size of terrarium.

Turtles can live for a very long time... most will easily outlive you. If you don't give it just the right living conditions, you'll condemn it to a slow, miserable death.
