I once stubbed my little toe on something and it hurt so much, swelled up,etc. I went to a foot doctor and I was told I had chipped the bone after it was x-rayed. I did not do anything, left the chip there. That seemed to be the best option, advised by the doctor. I believe the other option was that he could go in and remove the chip. My toe hurt for a year (really). Sometimes it gives me a little twinge, now, over 10 years later. I am not sure if the same applies to a bone chipped in a leg--probably--getting it x-rayed will let you know if it actually is a chip.

Generally, there is nothing done for a chipped bone, but you must first know that is all it is. You could have a hairline fracture besides that could become a problem later. Or, the chip could be large enough to knick the femoral artery, in which case they may want to remove it. Best to be seen first.

How do you know you chipped a bone if you didn't go to a doctor? The only sure way to tell would be to have it x-rayed or cat scanned, maybe even an MRI might show it.
