I'm going to say John McCain, despite his recent behavior. He is a genuine hero, and probably far too good a man for the typical Republican to consider. But he would go further than almost anyone to attract people like me: people who currently would NEVER vote Republican because of that party's unholy alliance with the religious right.
Remember that in the 2000 primaries he actually acknowledged that the religious right is a problem for America. I'd already vowed that I'd vote for anyone who said that - but then the Republicans reacted by slandering him right out of the race.

Newt Gingerich. He is the only living Republican that has swept the GOP into power. He denies it, but he is running. Rudy has no chance because he is tooooo liberal on social issues to win the primary. McCain is hated by the conservatives like me.

well that would be a candidate that plays on american optimistic fantasies with the best of them, mccain is out (too much the realist), some other simple minded idealist might sucker the voters yet one more time, but i kinda doubt it this go round.
