The world's increasing dependence on fossil fuel is very worrying indeed.
You think your $3.00 a gallon is expensive! Here in the UK petrol (gas to you) is now pushing £1 a litre. That is the equivalent of 7.11089607 U.S. dollars per US gallon (so Google tells me). My car costs me approximately 12p (nearly 23 cents) a mile to run. To be fair, a large proportion of the difference in price is due to the high taxes we pay on fuel here.
Your government (and mine) should be urged by the people (since you live in a democracy) to think seriously about alternative energy and to put money into research into it instead of spending millions of dollars to 'safeguard' oil supplies in other parts of the world. When you come to vote in 7 years time (or is it 10?), I hope you will know enough about it to choose your candidate wisely.

Everything was cheaper in the 80's. I could buy jeans for $15 and now their $40. A Big Mac was a dollar and now it's, well I don't know what it is, but I'm sure it's more. We pay the lowest gas prices in the world and still we moan and groan about it. My friends in England pay the equivalent of $7 a gallon. The oil companies are entitled to as much profit as they can make just like any other business. It's a business, they don't owe it to anybody to lower their prices. When it gets to high people will stop buying it and prices will go down. Why does everyone think the government should "do something about it". Personally, I don't like paying $40 for a pair of jeans or $100 for a pair of shoes, but I don't expect the government to "do anything about it". If I can't afford them, I don't buy them. Same with gas, if you can't afford it, don't buy it. If you can't do without it then pay what it costs. Jesus, what a bunch of crybabies.

Surprisingly, NO, I don't think they're too high, and here's why. As long as people keep driving their gas guzzling SUV's and pickup trucks and sports cars and cars not properly tuned in order to get their best gas mileage, all while having their airconditioners blasting away, creating frost on their windows, etc., and racing away when the light turns green or after they've stopped at a stop sign, or as they drive around with improperly inflated tires which impact their gas mileage, I don't think the gas prices have gotten near high enough. Now, I don't like driving my gas miserly car that gets 47mpg on the highway and paying such high gas prices, but your question wasn't about whether I liked the prices or not, it was about whether I thought the prices have gotten high enough, and as long as we're willing to do all what I've listed above, and beg for 70mph highway speeds after decades of experience tells us that cars perform better at 55mph, I don't think the average American driver has become knowledgeable or mature enough to be rewarded by lower gas prices. And I drove cars when the gas prices were 20 cents per gallon, and I still say this when they're $3.00 per gallon and more. And I'm totally against having the government come in and corrupt the free market economy in this country, which is working better than any economy in the world, and so completely consumer controlled, just because we're too undisciplined to exercise whatever maturity and / or intelligence we supposedly have to exercise the control we have in the free market economy. The government has never been established to protect us from our immaturity and undisciplined stupidity and gluttony. God Bless you.

Gas is cheap, there isn't much other things you can buy a gallon of for $3.00. And in the 80's it was cheaper then $1.50...but there is also something called inflation and market demand. What does the price of gas have to do with the governemnt, oil companies can charge whatever they want for it, and I say that it is cheap because people would still but it if it was $5.00 a gallon.

The gov't can't do much about it. We're being held hostage by the Iranians, Venezualians, and other oil-rich countries that all hate our guts, but love our money.
The Europeans are paying a lot more than us -- so we can't complain too much.
By the way.. There's very little a President can do to lower Gasoline prices. He can probably set policies that will bring the price up or down 25 cents... but that's it!
The Foreign oil that we use is controlled by countries in the middle east and south america that love our money.
Didn't you hear a quote by the president of Iran... "If you put sanctions on us, oil will rise to over $200 a barrel". We are being held hostage!
Solution: Get rid of all the tree huggers and start drilling in Alaska!

Good head on your shoulders little one :), at least your not asking whether it's okay to date at 11 or questions about pregnancy.... wheeeeeeew. Yes, gas is getting very much out of hand... be glad you won't have to deal with that for some time to come now. Unfortunately some of us work so far from where we reside that biking it is not an option... maybe car pooling will be the new thing all together as I don't know what I'm gonna do when it does hit $5.00 and up...

actually, I'm only 14 and I remember when gas was only a dollar a gallon....
anyways, I know that I will have some issues paying for gas when I am like 2 years older and can finally afford drivers ed. I'd like to dream that this is like that spurt in the 80s or some time around then when gas got up to like $2.50...and then went back down to $.80. But we were in Prosperity then (if I understand it right) and now were in recession and it is even higher than it was then....
My car uses $90 in gas a WEEK!
(my mom agreed that she would give me her car when I get through drivers ed)

Well, yes, it's obvious that gas is getting very high. Actually, not too long ago, gas in Texas was about $1.00 a gallon. I think the gov. should try to get their gas from another country where I'm sure they'll get it cheaper. Also, we all know that part of the problem is the war that is going on. Unless our soldiers come back home, i trully believe that gas will continue to get higher.

The gasoline prices are based on world market. Demand drives them up. We are the highest user of oil. China is catching up with us really fast. This is placing higher demands and the prices are going up to reflect this. The whole world is feeling these high prices. The prices in the US are no where near what they are in Canada, or Europe. When the demand goes down, so does the prices.

I'm going to give you credit for being 11 and paying attention to this stuff. Yes, it's horrible. It's almost getting too expensive to go to work. Oh and if you REALLY ARE 11 years old, your spelling is a lot better than most on here. Way to go.......I'm impressed. Have a great weekend!!!
