Actually, the first "automobile" was invented in France, by a gentleman whose name escapes me right at the moment. It was a three wheeled affair, steam powered with no steering gear in, get this, 1795.
I think the first production automobile was produced by the German company Daimler Benz. Mercedes was added later, as the name was taken from the name of Mr. Benz' daughter, Mercedes.
I may not have my facts exactly right, but I know I'm close.

Well the first real car per say was invented by Otto von Benz, who later joined with a coach manufacturer called Diamler to produce Diamler-Benz and in turn later partnered with a wealthy financier, whose name I do not recall, who invested in the company on the provision that the cars thereafter would bear the name of his daughter, Mercedes. Of course if you pop the hood on a Mercedes, you will still see the name Diamler stamped into the engine compartment somewhere, and the company is still known as Diamler-Benz, the cars being what bears the once young lady's name, may she rest in peace.
It is true also, as one of your respondants noted, that a steam powered wagon was created in the late 18th century but it would be a stretch to call that a car. One might as easily say that the first railroad locomotive was a car that ran on a tracked road.
The first Benz, as I recall, was a three-wheeled contraption with a small internal combustion engine, a steering tiller rather than a steering wheel, and was belt or chain driven. It rather looked like a small surrey with an engine on the back.

Henry Ford gets credit for inventing the car , but that is not true. He invented how to produce them on a mass scale. Cars were invented in Germany first.
