I'd rccommend either Depeche Mode or New Order. New Order are more synth/guitar based, and are both mainstream and listenable, but also very dance-like and almost electronica.
Try Power Corruption And Lies (1983) for starters, or the minimalist Movement(1981).
Depeche Mode were originally synthpop, but their later music is very atmospheric and deep. This is best seen in Music For The Masses (1987).

Try the German band "Rammstein", and for a first introduction with their music (metal/dance/industrial) go with the record "Rosenrot".
