My Dd is 10 mos. old, and I've pumped off and on since her birth. I always have the latch prob when I pump. It's like she's sucking me like the pump does, and the pump doesn't do well. When I don't pump, she latches normally and comfortably. I have an Ameda Purely Yours pump. Any advice? I'm uncomfortable!

I would guess that the pump doesn't fit you correctly, so you are damaging the nipples...then when baby nurses correctly, the pain is from the tissue damage caused by the pump.

Unfortunately, the only "cure" may be to find a pump that fits you. But before you do that, you can try calling Hollister (the manufacturer) and explain the problem you are having (see sources section below).

It's the pump. You can usually rent (in the U.S. anyway) hospital grade pumps from either your local hospital or your local La Leche league. Or, if your willing to put out the money, the Medela pump in style dual electric breast pump (avaliable at babies R us, Target or medical supply stores) is the very best, contains a couple of different attachments to try for the best fit. It is costly though (about $200)

Good luck!

Massage your breast before pumping, and feeding your baby. This simulations the breast, and allows the milk to flow. Also, hot showers tend to help as well. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and juice, this also allows your body to produce more milk. AND eat balance meals! When I was feeding my daughter, I'll grab a large glass of water/juice and go at it.

Most importantly stimulate those breast, massage, and hot showers... Just relax..Babies are able to tune in when the mother is tense...
Please consult with a lactation nurse! They are very very helpful!

Are you trying to nurse immediately after you've pumped?

Or is it just that any day you have pumped nursing goes weird?
