The IT guys want to update the computers overnight.

I've worked in a few places like that. Basically, it takes more power to keep rebooting the computer so if you're just doing basic stuff like working Word, Excel, and Internet, you're not going to reboot like you would need to with burning DVD's for example. Also, offices run updates at night so if your computer isn't on, it won't get the appropriate updates.

Maybe the computer is used as a server and needs to be on?

Because they dont want you to turn off the computers...maybe they want to re-read everything you have done while you were on the computer...they are watching you!!!.....hahahaha
