It is kinda of weird since Milan are actually the hated cousins. you know, in Italy it is just INTER! I mean, AC Milan is not known as Milan Milan, or Juve as Juve Turin, Roma Roma, Lazio Roma... because i hate that! INTER is just one! It is like to say NY Yankee Red Socks! Why FC Inter is known as Inter Milan around the world?

the name of the club is "Football Club Internazionale Milano"....so inter milan for short seems to work. people just need to make sure they dont confuse AC milan (which is actually "Associazione Calcio Milan") with inter milan.

Well in Italy Internazionale is known as Inter, and no more, as well as Juventus is known as Juve (the same issue could involve Juventus Turin and Torino AC).
It's an ancient behavior to add the own city to a club's name, and sometimes I hear again the old "Ajax Amsterdam" watching TV. And I like it cause I LIKE old attitudes in football.
Of course, sometimes those make not sense at all.
Chelsea, Arsenal, Fulham, and dozens more - LONDON?
And all Buenos Aires teams?
;-)
Btw Milan is "Milano" in English. In Italy we haven't any trouble in saying Internazionale MILANO...
