A speculum, in medical terms is anything that allows you to speculate on what a person has inside a deep orifice which is hard to see. They tend to include a light, and some mechanical device that opens an orifice slightly wider.
The "Women's health" speculum is shaped sort of like a long duck's bill, and goes into an organ known as the "vagina." It then spreads the walls of this organ, so as to allow the doctor to better examine an important ring of muscles known as the "cervix," which you, "Miles Long" have probably bumped into once or twice before.
More mundane "Speculums" include the tongue depressor, which allows for a view of the tonsils, and the ear plug device, which allows for a view of the ear drum. Proctologists have a very specialized speculum, You might call them for a checkup, if you need anything removed.

A speculum is a strange plastic or metal instrument that resembles a duck bill with a handle! Rather than quacking, it is inserted bill-end into the vagina. It is then cranked, for lack of a better word, open, until the cervix and vaginal canal can be easily viewed by a physician. It is then that a PAP smear can be performed, or any other procedures that need to be done in that region.

it's a metal or plastic device used to hold a womans vagina open so a doctor can do a pap smear, colposcopy, etc.... any procedure that requires a doc to insert an instrument inside the vagina without touching the sides of vagina.
it's shaped a like a gun... you hold it by the and handle and 2 long flat pieces are inserted... as the speculum opens the long flat pieces spread apart from eachother opening it up... when it's open enough for the doc insert something it locks open.. once the doc is finished they will release the long flat pieces and they'll come back together again.

From the feeling I get from the sound of your name, I will tell you that it is something that the dentist puts in your mouth before he works on your teeth.

It is the instrument the gynecologist inserts in the vagina and opens it up so he/she can see and inspect it.
