Doe's how much I need to pay for an apartment, my vehicle payment and all my other expenses determind how much child support I pay? I live in Connecticut. I earn $52k yr and she earns $23k yr. I am expected to pay $640 per month, seems a little high to me just for 1 child.

Child support is based on your income...does not matter how much she makes. Honestly, depending on which state you live in the rate for child support is ridiculous. I live in Illinois and in this state the statute for CS is 20% of your net income for one child and 28% for two children. So after you pay taxes and pay for your kids health insurance and for half of every other damn thing, you still have to pay 28% of your NET income!! My husband makes about 60K per year and we pay $1100 per month for two children. It is unfortunate, but nonetheless it is the law. Perhaps the guys who thought about these laws did not think that Mom getting a decent job to help support their kids was an option. Totally "can do" since Dad would have to pay for half of day care, right? Good luck and keep the faith.

They pretty much are. Usually child support for one child is 27-30% of your gross income, the only factor that changes that is if you are paying previous support for another child and insurance premiums paid for the child. You can go online and search child support calculators and it will give you a work sheet to fill out and will estimate what your support will be usually within a few dollar range. Another thing to remember too is it doesn't matter if she gets remarried and her hubby is a milonaire his income will not be calculated in with hers ONLY what she actually makes working. I know it seems high but the court figures even if it all goes for rent and nothing else then it is still for the child.

That sounds high to me too.

The court doesn't care about bills, rent, etc. Only health insurance and other child support, mainly.

If you have more visitation, it is less. Also, if you agree on a separate amount.

Here's the deal though.

I am a single parent. I pay $700 a month for child care, then I have diapers, food, clothing and toiletries to pay for. Rent for the second room... so when you add it up, kids are not cheap.

That sounds about right. Yes the laws are set in stone and it's not a good thing. If your ex decides she can no longer work or picks up a new hubby with a good job and she stops working....you're $640 would most likely double instantly and there isn't anything you can do about it. My ex hasn't worked a day since we divorced and I pay through the nose.

There are guidelines set by the court or something worked out between the couple based on income. Don't ask these dorky people on Yahoo.....DUH!!!

It all depends on how much you make a month. And if the mother has a job as well it shouldnt cost that much.
