It has a connection to racism. Granted the Confederate flag was the symbol for the South. The south wanted to succeed from the union for a number a reasons, mainly states rights. One of the rights is the issue of slavery. Slavery was not the only reason the south and the north went to war. It is the one with the most press per say and with the immancipation proclomation during the civil war people now associate the confederate flag as symbol or racism even though it is just a flag for the south

Its easy to put so much into a symbol so that no one has to take the shoulder of the blame. The South...check that...America was built on free labor.
Lots of the answers written here are the easy ones, the South was racists, blah blah blah, the whole country was racists. The North was racists against the South, the South against the slaves. We had major problems with the old melting pot with every race. But everyone has the right to believe what they will.
The flag is racists if you believe it to be, its heritage if you believe it to be. Just like a bed sheet used to be a bed sheet before some guy puts it on and walks the streets as the KKK.
In the end just thank heaven that everybody can believe what they want.

I'm sorry to inform you, but the Civil War was about States rights.
Some states wanted to be free to keep slaves when the federal government wanted to outlaw it. As a matter of fact, the first state to succeed from the Union was South Carolina upon the announcemnt that Lincoln, an abolitionist, won the presidency. They didn't even wait for him to mkae one executive order.
The South pulled out, formed the CSA and adopted that flag... all because they wanted to keep my ancestors as slaves. More recently, the KKK adopted that flag and harrassed and killed several innocnet black people. Honestly, what do you expect?
Now I understand that some feel that they have a need to acknowledge thier heritage.... I say the same thing to them that others say to me when I complain about slavery... It was 165 years ago. GET OVER IT.

Because the Confederate Battle Flag symbolizes slavery and segregation to many people. I don't agree with it, but I can see their point. I think that we are becoming way to PC in this country. The Confederate Flag represented the South's resistence to northern political dominance. Unfortunately, the KKK, American neo-Nazis and a few other ignorant, pinheads (did I say that outloud) decided to use it to further their causes.

The reason the Confederate Flag is looked upon as a symbol of racism is that it stands for a now-defunct nation which fought for the maintenance of slavery as an institution. For a person to fly the Confederate Flag is for that person to celebrate the ideals of the nation symbolized by that flag, and the continuance of slavery is one of those ideals.

its about seperation. The confederates wanted to keep their way of life. That also includes slavery, or slave labor if you prefer. You cannot seperate one from the other. It all falls up under the conferderate flag. Thats why black people consider the confederate flag a racist symbol, and glorifies a cynical narrow minded and "REDNECK" way of life. And we will always feel that way. Don't mind a rebel, just dont like what your symbol stands for.

it's kind of like the swastika and the Nazis. the swastika is a symbol that is cross cultural and has many meanings, but was used as a Nazi symbol. historically the African American hasn't had much love to give the Caucasian population in the south for obvious reasons; so their disdain for it is understandable. what's more several white supremacist groups covet the confederate flag as their symbol. the association is what makes many people believe it to be racist. fundamentalist racist groups however, are only the tip of the ice burg when it comes to racism.

I'm sure black people know all too well what the real meaning of the confederate flag is. It may represent southern heritage to white folks from the south. Unfortunately, southern heritage includes slavery and lynch mobs whose evil engulfed entire communities and still does to this day.

The confederate flag was a symbol of the accomplishments of the southern unites states, and for the African Americans who were taken to the southern states to work on farms and other jobs, they saw this flag as what is keeping them from their freedom, but the flag is only a symbol of he southern states accomplishments.

The Confederate flag became a symbol for those who sought to keep blacks enslaved. After the end of the Civil War, it also became a symbol for people who ARE racist. Therefore, the Confederate flag has become a racist symbol, despite its origins.
