A lot of friends and classmates at my undergrad institution - Gettysburg College (PA)- double majored in political science and history. History is a great major for learning how to do research and write papers; it's pretty much all you do as a history major. Political science majors are always making arguments, a necessary skill, especially if working in a courtroom.

I also hear philosophy is a good major for those interested in law because it teaches you how to make and support an argument.

Something else you could try is contacting law schools and ask them what majors or characteristics they like to see in applicants at their institutions.

Best of luck with your search for information.

The family lawyer I work for --- undergraduate at our local Midwestern college majoring in political science and Indiana Univesity for law school. But you can get into law school with just about any major. Just do well in school and on the LSAT. I think lawyering is a lot of listening. I think it would be very helpful to take some communciation classes (like what nurses would take that teaches you how to really LISTEN) and some business classes if you plan to be a sole practitioner or in a small firm.

Don't give your clients your home phone number. It's a safety issue for you, especially for high emotion family law cases. There is really nothing you can do for them after court hours anyway...and if it's an emergency, it's a police matter.

Niagara University - north of Niagara Falls, New York. Majored in Criminal Justice, minored in Sociology. You're right - they don't care. Take what you ENJOY!! Something you'll do well in because you like it. I went back and got a Master's in American History - should have done that first.
Family Law is the most difficult, on the lawyer, type of practice. You have to be able to keep your personal feelings out of it - which it doesn't sound like you'll be able to do. When you start dealing with people calling you at home on Sunday nights because Wife brought the kids back 10 minutes late, you'll understand. The children are the toughest. They are the ones who truly suffer and they don't have a say in much of anything.
The BEST job I had - Prosecutor. There's nothing like putting a bad guy in State Prison for the rest of his life.
In any event, Law School is probably the most well-rounded graduate education you can get. And you can use it to do almost anything - not just be a practicing attorney. Good Luck!!!
