I am 33. So I'm wondering if it would be a good place to make friends with singles in their 30s. Or is it more of a college town for youngins?

Chapel Hill is a great town. It depends on your age. The high school and elementary school district is one of the best in the country, but the single family housing is expensive. Chapel Hill and the neighboring town of Carrboro are both great for young people. There are a lot of fun things to do and the people are nice (but very liberal). Chapel Hill is far enough inland that we don't impacted by hurricanes too often. Every 10 years of so, there will be a hurricane that comes far enough inland that we get tornados, power outtages, etc. I went to college at UNC, moved away and came back. The place is great and I highly recommend it.

Chapel Hill does not have hurricanes, but gets plenty of storms & rain from the Hurricanes that are on the coast.
I think Chapel Hill is an older community. Definately in the country; southern culture. I've been there once; my mother-in-law lives there. It is surrounded by old tobacco farms, cotton mills, etc. That area of NC is kind of declining b/c of the decline in tobacco product sales.
It is definately the 'small country town' feel. I don't know how well 'outsiders' are liked.

I don't know about making friends, but Chapel Hill, NC doesn't have hurricanes. They're not on the coast. Look at the map.
