3 business men decide to share a room to save money.
They ask the desk clerk how much for a room? $30.00 he replies. Each man pays $10.00. and he hands them a key.
A little later he discovers he overcharged them $5.00.
He calls the bell hop and tells him to take the $5.00 to the 3 men.
On the way up the bell hop decides he cannot divide the $5.00 evenly, so he sticks $2.00 in his pocket, and hands each man $1.00 back. Now each man has paid $9.00 each. 3 X 9 = 27.
Plus the $2.00 the bellhop stuck in his pocket = $29.00.
Where is the $1.00 out of the original $30.00?

this is an old puzzle and it has been asked and answered here several times before

you could search for previous incidents of the question and see lots of nice answers

this works as a puzzle because the question includes a misleading incorrect assumption

"Plus the $2.00 the bellhop stuck in his pocket" is just a trick. That two the bellhop took should be subtracted from the 27 (after all, it came out of the $27 that the customers paid)

27-2=25, which is what the inkeeper got

of the original 30, the inkeeper got 25, the patrons got 3, and the bellhop got 2

no missing money

its an old puzzle and a clever one

The men paid a total of $27 dollars for a $25 room. Add the three dollar rebate to the $27 paid and you come to $30.

The dollar is not missing.

The hotel kept $25
The bellhop kept $2
The business men got $3 back
25+2+3 = 30

Never mind the original £30.00, where's the original question? They used to ask this one in the stone age about Druid's at a conventiuon, but instead of money they used menhirs and the 30 were used to build Stonehenge. That explains the missing stones at Stonehenge.
