At work with a black worker (I'm a road inspector) I told him he was looking pale today: he had white concrete dust on his face. I talk to him in a friendly way always and i was just giving him crap, but did he take it as a slur? It really did look funny. Would it have been better to say nothing or not to give him crap. I live in rural Minnesota. I'm not very sophisticated. I was really trying to include him in a wierd way.

Depends on the guy. He may not have realized he had concrete dust on his face though when you said it. Probably figured it out later when he got a look at himself.

Depends how comfortable you are around each other. A lot of the black guys I know wouldn't take offense and might find it funny. How did he react? If he just laughed it off and didnt give you a weird look or anything, its probably fine. Of course if you're concerned, you could casually tell him you didnt mean anything by it and you hope he isnt offended.

Hmmm. Well, did he hit you--with a LOOK? Too bad you can't just ask him if he's cool with the teasing.

if he didnt know he had it on his face, then it might seem taht way to him. he wouldnt think of it as a racist slur if he knew you were kidding.

Why don't you ask him how he felt? He knows the best!
