I enjoy the music of the Beatles. But I do get a little whipped when others say they (or anyone else) are "the greatest band ever." Not "one of the greatest" mind you... but "the greatest" above all genres and eras of music.
I refer to the Beatles as "overrated" because of this. Because I think that someone giving them that distinction is overrating them automatically.
Same thing for greatest song, greatest album... etc. Who's to blame? VH-1?
Any thoughts?

If any band ever had emprical evidence to support them as the greatest band ever, it would have to be the Beatles. They hold so many chart and sales records that it's nearly impossible for any band to ever repeat their success. Global sales show that the Beatles are the #1 selling band in the history of recorded sound.
The Beatles only produced albums for a span of 8 years yet somehow have produced more memorable songs than any other band in history. They have more number 1's in that short span of time than The Rolling Stones have had in their 40 year history. They're the only band to hold all top 5 spots on the US Billboard 100 at the same time. They have replaced themselves at #1 on that same chart, a feat accomplished by very few.
Not only are they popular with the public but they are also popular with music critics. Beatles albums consistenly rank in music polls as the most influential albums in the history of music. In Rolling Stone magazine's top 500 albums poll, 4 Beatles ablums are in the top 10. The Beatles also have the most albums in that poll with 11. In another poll by Rolling Stone, the Beatles have 23 songs, more than any other band/artist, in the top 500 greatest songs of all time.
Personally, I cannot think of a band that has more good songs than the Beatles. I have yet to hear another band which has consistently made as many great songs. I've heard many bands which have one or two great songs, but only The Beatles have nearly their entire catalog as great music. That's why I believe them to be the "best band ever."

I think there are a few bands who most people would agree are the best five or six. However, the rest could be considered personal preference. I think the Beatles is the easiest choice, and you hear it so many times that mostly everyone agrees. However, I wouldn't say that they are better than the Rolling Stones, for example. I think the two are on par...

I think The Beatles ARE the best band ever according to the charts....I say I think Queen is the best band ever, but I also say it's a fact that The Beatles are the best band ever.

Who was the best band of the sixties the Beatles, who was the best band of the seventies led zeppelin, who was the best band of the eighties ?. So it depends on what decade your talking about.

i wouldn't necessarily call them overrated because not EVERYONE considers them to be THE GREATEST band ever, perhaps the people who consider them such overrate them in comparison to your own ranking scale. but then they could turn around and say that you underrate them in comparision to their ranking. the bottom line is that words like "best" and "better" are subjective, so you calling them overrated is also subjective.
