The only thing that can heal a breach of trust is time and patience. You must be patient, and continue being honest and trustworthy with your friend. You have dealt him a deep wound, since he placed so much trust in you in the first place. Just back off a little and let him call the shots until he starts to trust you again. And when you do regain his trust, don't, I repeat DON'T let history repeat itself. I hope things work out for you.

Have you ever heard the saying "time heals all wounds"? I think it applies in your situation. Although it may not happen as quickly as you would like, with time you'll be able to regain his trust if you truely are friends. Unfortunately, it is now up to you to prove that you are trustworthy. Even though you did not actually steal the money, it technically was in your possession when it disappeared. I think you did the right thing by replacing the stolen money, and that may be your saving grace in this relationship. Just be honest in the relationship, prove that you are trustworthy... in short, be a true friend.
