It may take a while. Many factors can play into how long it takes to defragment you hard drive.

If the disk has not been defragmented in a long time it may take a while. How full the disk is can factor in as well. If you have less than 25% free it will significantly lengthen the amount of time it takes. Also, large files can take significantly longer to defragment. Many games include files which are several hundreds of megabytes big.

Running defrag often (especially after installing a large application) is the best way to keep on top of it.

I'd just start it running at the end of the night and let it run while you sleep.

If you have the cash, you can buy Diskeeper for $29.95 + Tax ( http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp ). The Defrag application that comes with windows is a minimalistic version of Diskeeper. Microsoft licensed the technology from them. The full Diskeeper product boasts faster defragmentation time, defragmentation scheduling (called set and forget), and the ability to defragment files which the Windows version cannot. There are more features, but those are the main ones.

It's probably because you have processes running in the background and defrag is constantly forced to restart. To get around that, you need to restart your computer in safe mode.

Reboot your computer and when it starts to reboot, press the F8 key. The exact time that you should press the F8 key varies with different Windows versions and it is always difficult to pinpoint. Sometimes pressing the F8 key and holding it down during the boot process will work. Continuously tapping the F8 key during the boot process seems to work the best for most computers.

Once the safe mode screen comes up, use the arrow key to choose "Safe Mode". You can verify that you are in safe mode by noting that the computer screen says "safe mode" in each corner. You may notice that the screen looks different, perhaps grainy or pixilated. That is normal for safe mode. Once in safe mode, start the defrag process as noted above.

Defrag should operate without any problems. After it's finished, just reboot your computer and you're good to go.

I had a laptop that did the same exact thing.

Turn off your screen saver, and start a defrag before you leave for work. (Turn monitor off).

It will be done by the time you get home.

If it still doesn't work you may want to use a surface scan in scandisk. It detects errors that a quick scan can't.

I've had defrag fail when the drive is nearly full. If yours is, free up some space first.
