You need to release and then renew your IP addresses. Problem is, since I don't know your OS, I can't tell you how to do it. Do a Google search for how to release IP addresses. Or start at Microsoft (if you're using Windows), here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/tips/cerulli1.mspx

Maybe the DNS servers are not defined. Are you using DHCP? You should be. Can to type an IP address and get there? For example, instead of http://www.yahoo.com/ try:

http://209.73.186.238/

If you are connecting directly to a cable or DSL modem (instead of a router) then you need to set his laptop to use PPoE instead of TCP/IP.

Try it with Firefox, or maybe try using a CAT5 if you're not, make sure the CAT cable you're using is compatible with the notebook.
