Yardsale and thriftstore clothes can be absolutely wonderful!!! It can be a whole adventure putting together a wardrobe. Look at it as an magic journey to find special treasures.

Having family financial trouble can be really tough. However - by pulling together you have an opportunity to learn to love each other for who you are - not what you can spend on clothes and other material objects. You are learning young how to focus on what is important - many people don't get this opportunity. It is up to you as to what your attitude is going to be - we cannot always control our circumstances in life - but we can control what we decide to do with our life challenges. I encourage you to see this as an opportunity to be positive and find creative ways to dress.

You don't say how old you are. But you can go to the library with your mom and/or Dad - or both - and look at the fashion magazines. Look to see what the styles are being shown, that you like for you. What colors do you like? Choose your favorites - and then right them down on a paper. Then start looking at tag sales, estate sales and thrift stores for treasures that are on your color list.

Do you sew? Maybe this is time to learn? I went through junior high and high school wearing pants, skirts and dresses that I made from fabric I found on sale and at yard sales. I also learned to make patchwork purses, vests and belts from dresses and clothing that I found at these sales. You can learn to make necklaces and bracelets by beading your own.

Another idea is to have your friends over for a afternoon or sleepover where everyone brings clothing, belts and purses that they are no longer wearing, or have gotten as gifts - but just aren't right for them - and then have a "free" tag sale. Usually everyone goes home with a new treasure.

I know it can be difficult if your friend's families are not having the same struggle - but you can use this time to engage your creativity. You will look back on this time as a place that you learned to turn hard times into a special adventure. Think positive! Good Luck to you!

sometimes you can find really cool vintage-y things in thriftstores and the clothes will be unique, same thing with yardsales. but if your family is in a struggle, dont worry too much about being 'cool', you'll be fine with whatever you have =]

You can find some pretty good things at thrift stores and yard sales, but you just have to have patience and some crafts in order to make things yours personally. What I mean by crafts is to repair/fix or add something snazzy to something you may find at a yard sale or thrift store.

In college, my friends and I would always scope out the two for jeans and other cute, cool and original accessories. Think about it this way: you won't be looking like everyone else, but yet have a new, original look!
