Today, Baltimore dealt Lopez and cash to the Red Sox for a player to be named later, despite the fact the trading deadline was last Monday. How was this move allowed?

Javy Lopez was able to be traded after the deadline beacause of a system called waivers. Any team can put any player on waivers. If you put someone on waivers it is almost like putting them on a trading block. Meaning that your willing to hear offers from varipus teams.

Hope this helps!

We put him through waivers. Which is allowed after the deadline. He was getting next to no play time here, just caught whenever Rodrigo Lopez pitched, or DH'ed. Now he will get to play more and maybe even get that Ring that he never managed to get with Atlanta, and sadly probably wouldn't have gotten here in B-more. Good luck Javy!

The deadline is for trading players without them having to clear waivers first. They can still be traded after the deadline, providing they clear waivers. (While a player is on waivers, the team with the worst record is given first option to acquire said player.)

Lopez made waivers which means no other team wanted him, so the Red Sox claimed him off waivers, and he is now a member of Red Sox Nation!!

Go Sox!!

He was traded on waivers. Let me explain:

Virtually every player is placed on waivers. Teams with the worst record have a shot at claiming the player and work out a deal with his team before teams that have good records do.

One more thing, usually only players with semi big contracts can "clear waivers" meaning they can be traded.
