I would like to finish my basement. My windows are grade level now, but the bottom sill is too high for local codes. I was told I need to use an egress. Any comments or suggestions with this.

egress are require if the basement room is used as a bedroom, some cities might require egress if its a living space. It expensive to do but if you ever sell your home you can add the sq footage of the basement as living space. If you plan to have someone come in to do the work it will cost about $1500 ( in the midwest) per window.

if you plan to do it yourself its a big job. 1 dig out the area out side and then brick the area
2. with a power saw cut the fountain of your house to the size of the window
3. frame the window area
4 install the egress window.

What do the windows have to do with constructing an exit? That's all an egress is, a fancy word for an exit, and I don't see the connection between it and the windows. The cost is going to be determined by a number of factors, such as, dirt removal and materials needed for the work planned. Without knowing at least those two pieces of information, it is impossible to give any kind of estimate for what you need. A big factor is whether you're doing the work or whether you're going to have a contractor do it. If you're contracting the work out, then get three or more estimates or bids, whichever you wish, detailing the work to be done along with the materials projected for completion of the project. Compare them and choose the one that fits your needs and in which you have enough trust to contract the job to. If you're doing the work, more information is needed in order to have a better idea of how to inform you or suggest advice to you.
