Because Interstate Highways do not have stop signs or red lights. Even a short highway is better than no highway- especially in Hawaii.

It's not possible. An interstate highway is a highway that passes between several states, or even across the entire country. Hawaii is just ONE state, so it is not possible to have an inter-state highway there because it is just one state.

According to wiki:

"While the name implies that Interstate highways cross state lines, many do not. Rather, they are funded federally with money shared between the states. There are interstate highways in Hawaii, funded in the same way as in the other states, but entirely within the populous island of Oahu. They have the designation of H-X and connect military bases."

Mainly they need federal funding to maintain the highway. They other reason is that lot of people from other states come and use that highway. If it is not named Interstate Highway, federal will not give money for the highway.

interstates were started to move military quickly through the country, and to be runways,

the one by me like 12 years ago had a 737 land on it in an emergency, but intended for airforce

since then, war has changed and they are not useful for military, but because of them, america has one of the best transportation systems in the world, road wise, mass transoit sucks though

Hawaii has them for military purposes

Didn't know they did - I guess that means Alaska has them too. It's probably just part of the US highway department's numbering system. Good question!
