Okay, so I've tested this out in the forum where people who are aflicted with this actually are (because they wanted to see it, and I'm a nice person. I accepted their critque on it.)

So the basis for my story is this (it's a high fantasy setting): There's a world where magic can be used, but only by a select few. The consequence for using the magic comes at a price: They get CH. The mages themselves only know of their mentors when they are learning how to use magic, and know of no other mages. There is a creature that they remind themselves of, and which follows them, known as "The beast" or the "The black dog", it's shadows tends to frequent heir vision for days after they've used their magical powers.

CH stands for cluster headaches, which are a very real thing. I decided to write this after speaking with my father, who has them. If you would like to learn more about them, go here: http://www.clusterheadaches.com/

"The beast" is a physical representation of cluster headaches.

Also, I'm trying to raise awareness for this condition by writing this book. At the moment what they are getting prescribed to them is for migraines (which these are not, an I'm told are much, much worse by those unfortunate enough to get both).

These people tend to know a lot more about their condition than doctors, because it only affects a very small perentage of the population (I think it's something like 5 or 6 percent of people worldwide get them).

Chris: If you'd like good information, talk to the kind people on there. They are willing to help, and know what works best to help cope with the pain. There is a board specifically for children who have cluster headaches as well, so there would be other parents on there who know what you're going through.
