I think this would have to be the Banyan Tree in Maui, Hawaii or another Banyan tree which I think is in Australia. These trees have one main trunk and then many other trunks and can keep taking root and grow. The one is Maui is as wide as a good size house. Other than that probably one of the Redwood trees would be it.

I do believe that was the tree that sits near the Acropolis. I do not remember how wide it was, however, it should be about 4-5 meters in diameter. that's about 15 feet.

A car had crashed into it in 1974 If I recall correctly, and the tree has been protected behind a chained fence ever since.

Funny enough, the tree suffered no damage at all.. lol

Depends on what country you are speaking of. The banyan in India can grow 3 miles long with roots that reach down and implant into the ground.

In Michigan there are "champion" oak trees that are at least 3 feet in diameter and canopy that can span 1/4 acre. Look in www.ask.com for "Champion trees". Records are kept somewhere.
