Early in the movie "Jurassic Park" the visitors to the island ask how they prevent the reconstituted dinosaurs from breeding in the wild. The scientist responds by saying something to the effect that, "They are inherently born female and require a certain chemical at a certain stage to develop into males. We simply deny them that." It works something like that, although I don't know whether humans are inherently female.

At a certain developmental stage in the womb, a chemical washes over the developing life, making it male or female. Sometimes, the chemical will wash over only the body or over only the brain. If that happens, it results in a child with a brain that develops as male and body that develops female, or vice-versa.

According to http://transsexual.org/What.html , "...transsexuality is most commonly caused by stress-related hormonal changes in the womb...There is evidence that more transsexuals are born during times during or following war, for instance."

Incidently, some definitions that may be helpful:
Transgender: someone displaying gender characteristics of the opposite gender

Transexual: someone who believes that their mental/emotional sex doesn't match their physical body. Some people refer to this as 'Gender Identity Disorder', a term offensive to many transexuals.

Transvestite: Someone who dresses in clothes associated with the opposite sex

Intersexed: Someone born with the sexual organs of both sexes

The above responders are confusing transsexual with Gender Identity Disorder. Transexual simply means that you enjoy dressing in clothing traditionally worn by the opposite sex. These people are usually heterosexual, but derive pleasure, comfort, and/or a sense of well-being when dressed up in such clothes.

Gender Identity Disorder is a very rare mental illness where your gender (your sense of being male or female) doesn't match your anatomic sex.

I don t think that it;s any one thing,(ie:stress, role model, peer pressure, traumatic experience in life,
I believe one is either born into that role/personality, or something(s) someone(s) has had a tremendous impact on that person in order to influence them in whatever way they do.
i was dressing up at my babysitters house starting at age 3, She had a big box with lots of fun stuff that I could spend hours entertaining myself, i dont believe it was a learned lifestyle if you will.It was not a habbit. What did cause problems and confusion was that I realized one day how happy and content I was, When my parents came to get me, I would get depressed as I had to return to being that ugly, stupid boy. The only reason I have not lived as i so desire to and feel i should be is my mother could not take it abd I really feel it would kill her, Approaching 50, I have lived a horrible, miserable, and lonely life, My mom with Leukemia, may not be around much longer. If she does go, the first thing im going to do is pursue becoming myself. The inside is almost already complete as it was already done for me. Hopefully the exterior part will go faster than 50 years

Well...at least they have surgeries for that. Just think of how miserable you would be if you wanted so much to shed this frail and imperfect body of meat. Imagine the misery of wanting nothing less than machined perfection, but being stuck with organic meat mitts. To be exempt from the frailties and imperfections of this prison of flesh...

The body of one sex but more than usual hormones of the other make you feel that you were born the wrong sex, a gender identity crisis. It is disorieting, you never feel at ease with people.

I believe God made man for woman and woman for man. He made you the way you are "in his likeness". So, I also believe that if one wants to be transsexual it is a psychiatric thing. That's my own opinion.
