The free public school system begins at kindergarten level (4-5 year olds), through to year 12. Private schools you obviously pay for, and is an individual cost depending on the school.

p.s. have just seen that your child is only 1. In that case you would be looking for a child care centre. Child care is approximately $50 a day, depending where you go. However this is offset by what is called a child care rebate, which is dependent on your family income. So it could cost you as little as $15 per day if you fall into the low income bracket. As a recommendation I would suggest you look for a community based child care centre rather than a private centre.

Public (government) schools are not free, they generally charge fees of a couple of hundard dollars per year. This fee is waived or discounted If you are eligable for a school card (ie low income earner). High schools sometimes charge extra for books or you can get them yourself. Private school fees vary depending on the school but are several thousand dollars per year.
