I started ballet when I was 18 and started pointe literally the day after I turned 20. Yes you do need the experience, but more importantly you need the strength and technique so you don't hurt yourself.

I recommend doing many ankle strengthening excercises like releves. Work toward being able to hold posse releve for 30 seconds without wobbling.

Then when you're in class be the best you can.

GOod Luck, I'm sure you'll be on pointe in no time.

You could be 89 and your not too old. (your doctor may disagree though :) Dancing is an art form that helps you feel vibrant, young, full of energy, beautiful and ballet has all that and the ability to make you feel elegant and irritable. It is a lot of hard work and you may be a little bit behind the other girls but give it a try and if you enjoy it then keep going. The people who are the best at what they do are the best only because they have heart, no matter how long or how short of a time they have been doing it.

I think i read that Martha Graham started ballet at 18 and then she made her own modern ballet company. So you can definitely get going somewhere good now! If you want to be on pointe, it depends on your body, how hard and OFTEN you work, and your teacher. My friend started pointe a week after she started ballet, but she caught on very fast. Just do your best to understand how your body is working when you are dancing and exercise the same muscles over and over. Also, when you take your classes, tell your teacher that you want to go on pointe someday so s/he can help you get ready. You might be ready in a couple months. It'll definitely be worth it.

Oh honey, go for it and see what happens. If you don't you will regret it. You never know, you might just be a natural! Good Luck! By the way, whre I live they offer adult ballet classes, there are women in their 30's and 40's in those classes! 14 is not too old to take Ballet.

No, notably if you happen to already do karate! You'll undoubtedly have well stability and versatility and I suppose having ideal pointe approach you might have pointy feet and a first-class arch (that's a well factor!)

how old is too old?
i began ballet lessons in my thirties and loved every minute of it. going on pointe has to do with the growth of the bones in your feet as well as knowing the basics. you can't start on pointe but you can learn to dance ballet. talk to a teacher of dance.

Your feet and balance have already formed to walking not ballet. That is why they told you that. More structure is needed and it is easier at a younger age

If you wanna go for it - forget the "too old part" for it will be your most limiting factor
