The Japanese people as a whole are cognasent of how the world feels about whaling. As a result and even though, whale meat is still readily available in Japan, most is not purchased for human consumption. And by the way - you are a butthole!

Whale was an important source of protein in an impoverished Japan after World War Two, but has become a gourmet food in the last few decades as prices rose in line with falling supply.
BTW, "Japs" is considered a pejorative term.

Why do we Americans persist in eating Hot Dogs? We all know they grind up "everything but the oink"..(pig snouts, jowls, fat, intestines, hearts, lungs,..oh you betcha)...so what's the big deal about Whale blubber? So, make mine a Chili Cheese Dog!

For the same reasons that Americans insist on eating beef, chicken, turkey, alligator, pork, and any other kind of nasty stuff you can think of that once was a living, breathing, being with a face. Americans eat pigs feet, and chicken gizzards, liver, lard, all of which is nasty to me. But most people around here like it and it is just part of our culture.

They eat all kinds of things I wouldn't consider touching....I mean look at sushi...that's not food it's bait! To answer your question though it has to be a cultural thing. Even the differences between the eating habits of Americans and English peoples can be suprising.
