My nephews (15 & 16 yrs.old) father (my brother-in-law) has stopped them from listening to music. Because he says he has to answer to God about his household. He the Ruler!

A "Dictatorship" rule is NOT GOOD. Forcing ones opinions on others is not good either; and trying to rule what those teens will like or not is impossible! They will just resent it, even if it's hidden. So - that's the way it is; but - he's not going to see it that way now, is he? Find something in his religion, that pushes the concept of `do unto others as you wld have them do unto you' or others that bring home the idea that it's irreligious to stop another's life or some such. Good luck!

Parents can do whatever they want and I have no problem with parents of ANY religion limiting the types of music kids listen to.

However, I think that music is an important part of a child's life - it helps them be more well rounded and appreciative of the arts. I'm not familiar with any passages in the bible that ban music - if there were, I'd assume that bands like U2, evanessence, Jars of Clay, and Musicians like Jessica Simpson wouldn't be doing what they are doing. . .

Sheltering kids too much never really got them anywhere except in trouble or turning them into complete space cadets.

Parents can impose whatever rules they want to in their homes. I have a nephew that didn't allow his kids to listen to anything but christian music in their home. The boys are grown now, going to college, and doing just fine. They haven't gone "wild" like some people predicted they would. Didn't hurt them a bit.

Depends on the music... I'm not a Christian, but there's some music out there I wouldn't want *my* kids listening to.

Prolly the hardest thing would be to actually raise the kids with good taste in music.

i don't think so.... the children are going to be exposed to things good And bad..they have to learn on their own how to pick and choose to be "good people" in general.. just because you like rap or punk doesn't make you a bad person. of course some of it is derogatory, but so are some other people. are they going to go and wash that person's mouth w/ soap personally?? it's impossible..which is why in this world, the important thing is to teach a child respect, love, open mindedness, and the diff between right or wrong; acting like listening to music is *wrong* doesn't make sense... if the kid knows not to call a girl "ho" and act like a pimp, why should it matter if he listens to the music? ok that's just another whole can of worms, but sorry i love rap music it's fun. but i ain't no ho! ;)

I don't think that you should stop them from listening to music all together, maybe just set some ground rules. Tell them no swearing or other things that you think are inappropriate.

They should be able to listen to what ever they want as long as it's not racist or suicidal or extremely degrating to women.
