I only have the base game. Should I get the exp's? Are they worth it and if so which 1 is best. I am 38 so I don't know if I would like University.

If you just want one expansion, get Nightlife.
It's a great extension of the base game and same basic style of game play.
Uni is wonderful but quite different. If you do play the Uni expansion as the game is intended, it can be very intense because the objective is to get the kids graduated. It plays like a young adult version of getting kids through school in the base game. You can elevate their school experiences with Secret Societies, and other perks, just as Private school sims get some extra perks in the base game. (education rocks with the Maxis folks).
You work at getting their grades up, doing homework but with a tighter time schedule and crazy things to do when not studying. It is not as relaxed as the base game and NL are. Uni does give your sims additional power over their their goals and wants and they can earn a lot more money.
If I could only get one expansion, it'd be NL because it would be more of a continuation of the base game, without the intensity of Uni. (I have both and prefer that way too, lol)

I would suggest Nightlife because of the dating and cars. I'm a romantic at heart, so I enjoy making my sims have dream dates.
University is pretty boring, but it gives you more options in the game if your sims get through it. Open for Business is not really anything special either, except it's fun to make stores.
The new Pets expansion pack looks like it will be very fun too.
So my #1 suggestion is Nightlife and #2 is Pets.

Hi im 45 and i love playing the sims 2, i reccommend nightlife and open for business. University did not intrigue me at all but i am having fun with those two expansion packs.

Nightlife because you get cars and can go downtown.
but honestly each one adds a new dimension to the game it just depends on what you want to add to your game.
University - new careers, college
Nightlife - cars, dating, new pleasure aspiration
Open For Business - home businesses
and Pets is coming out in September its looking awesome so far!
