You could be anemic...especially if you've been feeling light-headed.
Leukemia also causes bruises, but I certainly wouldn't jump to that conclusion. I'm sure it's something very simple that vitamins or a change in diet can fix.
You should see a doctor.

Do you have any tiny little red dots on your skin? Not like a rash, but like a burst blood capillary? They are called petecchiae. Petechiae and bruising can be a sign of low platelets or platelets that are not working very well. This can be due to lots and lots of things. Are you taking aspirin, Plavix or any anticoagulants? These medications can cause bruises because they keep the platelets from working correctly (and also help prevent blood clots). A few are common but if you have a lot of these along with the bruises you might call your doctors for a checkup. I've read some of the other answerer's and I wouldn't be too concerned about leukemia just yet - that would be a worst case scenario.

I don't know about thumb-sized. But last winter, I filled in at goalie for my ice hockey team for like a week. The very first shot I took in the game was able to squeeze between all that equipment and hit the top of my knee. I had a black and blue knee for weeks. lol Ouch!

It's probably anemia. I have a bruise that i've had for over a year, don't know how it got there. but i just found out i have anemia.
When you go to the doctor, have them check your thyroids and also for anemia.

I don't want to scare you, but see a doctor fast for checks. Bruising, as you describe, could be one of the first signs of leukemia. Please let me know what the outcome is. (arjay38@gmail.com)

Get it checked out right away.
I don't want to alarm you with what I think it may or may not be.
Talk to a doctor immediately.
