my computer just stopped working today and the repair guy said that the mother board needs replacing. What would cause this??? I am on a friends computer at the moment....

thats what they tell everbody when they really dont know.Its possible for motherboards to stop working although it is rare.
was there a thunderstorm? do you have a UPS? or it might just be old ........

Thunderstorm could have sent a surge through the board and shorted its delicate circutetry. also tiny fluctuations in the power coming out of the plug will over time cause the motherboard to wear out but usually the power supply will go first.this is why you should have a UPS (uniterruptable power supply) to even those power spikes out

Why will your car not start, why do glasses break when you drop them? That is the way it is, and it could be a million different reasons why. It could also be that the person fixing your computer doesn't know what they are talking about.

was it abit motherboard they bought a bunch of bad parts. most of the other people are right the number one reason is a electric spike thru the telephone connected to your computer. most people protect the electric but not the telephone.

a number of reasons:
(1) it's old
(2) you didn't have a good surge protector and you got hit with a power surge and it fried.
