The trade works great for the yankees provided that both matsui and sheffield do not come back this year and sheffields option is not picked up for next year. Sheffield will cause major problems in the clubhouse this year if he returns and his playing time is reduced.

I think the the Abreu trade makes the Yankees the favorite to win the World Series. Their lineup is so powerful they can put up 5 runs a night easily. And their starting pitching is coming around (Lidle had a great game for NY last night).
I've always wondered why catchers don't have a higher average, especially since they are always studying film and notes on opposing pitchers. As for pitchers, they just don't put in as much work or are as concerned with hitting. It's not their primary job or what they get paid for.

Abreu and Lidle are both better than the crap the phillies took for them. this deal is b.s. pitchers don't focus on hitting, so if they get a hit every 5 abs, that is good, and catchers deal with the gruel of squatting the entire game and a lot of the time they aren't 100%, so they have a hard time hitting, especially as they get older.

pitchers really on pitch every 5th day. they hardly ever practice with the bat. catchers for the most part are like any other positioned players. you have those that swing a great bat such as mauer, martinez, lo duca, barrett, benjie molina and mcann while some others are as good with the bat.
great trade for the yanks getting abreu and lidle!

I think it is great if he can get back to his old self. Catchers have horrible batting averages because they are tired and pitchers don't care about hitting.

I hated it. Abreu has been a phillie player for as long as I can remember. The phillie are shooting themselves in the foot by getting rid of an awesome, veteran outfielder.

good get for ny.....he should thrive in that stadium with all that protection in the lineup. he'll score and drive in a ton of runs!
philly was too cheap to keep him considering his contract.
pitchers hit 3-6 times a week .....they don't spend alot of time practicing.
and catchers play a very greuling position. besides, most managers want them to focus on defense and calling the game first.
