it's carving on marble stone , the marble is said to be of very poor quality according to curators, the marble has small holes all around which cause it to deteriorate faster, this is why in 2003 curators had a big controversy because they didnt know if they should put water on the statue. it's also out of proportions but michelangelo made it like this on purpose because it was to be placed on a pedestal to be looked at from the bottom up.
