You can't really restrict who answers - but if you limit a question like this to Americans, isn't that going to slant your answers pretty heavily one way? Surely if you are genuinely interested in getting a serious answer you need the opinions of people who are passionate about (what 90% of the planet calls) football?

Soccer's great and all, but football is more exciting for me, personally. The big hits, the breakaway runs, the long bombs, the pageantry of college football, I love it. Both rugby and soccer are fun, too. But if I had to watch one of the three, it would definitely be football.
And to all you word elitists out there, the term "soccer" was actually invented in England. When the rules of soccer were codified, it was called association football to distinguish it from rugby football. From "assoc" developed the colloquial word "soccer". In countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the U.S., or South Africa the word football does not refer to soccer, but either Canadian football, American football, Aussie rules football, or rugby, as these sports are more popular in those countries. If you need at any proof of that, look at the Australian national team; they're called the Socceroos.
This question is clearly in the American football category, so to all of you who come in here and say "the rest of the world this", you can stop now because you're wrong, we're talking about American football, and we don't care--we'll call it what we like, you can call it what you like.

Football. Soccer doesn't interest most Americans. I didn't even watch the World Cup until the Finals...

6 or 7 years ago I would have said football. Now I'm all about soccer. I fell in love with the game after becoming disillusioned with football when I played. I tried rugby after football actually but I tore up my knee so I decided to give soccer chance and I'm glad I did.

Such a dumb question. It's apples and oranges. They're two entirely different sports. They require completely different skills to play, different strategies, etc. They each have their positives and their negatives. Why does everybody feel the need to compare them just because the word "football" is used for soccer everywhere else?

Football all the way! It is more exciting to watch and I have my local team. Maybe if we had a pro soccer team in Philly, I would watch, but probably not!
