Simply say.." I need a day to consider your offer" then see what happens at the next interview

This is the old risk reward thing. Do you risk job #1 for a bigger potential reward. In the end, the calculus always remains the same: how big a risk for how sweet a reward.

First, examine job #2. How competitive are you for that position? What is their hiring timeline? How much better is the job?

If job #2 is only slightly better, I would accept job #1. If job #2 looks to have a long drawn out hiring process (more than a week -- and that seems likely) and you really want one of these two jobs, I would probably accept job #1. If I did not think I was very competitive for job #2, I would take job #1.

So what if job #2 seems perfect and you really want that job? How prepared are you to risk the sure thing (job #1)? Any employer would give you a few days to consider the offer (think 24 to 72 hours -- not two weeks). I would then talk to job#2 and let them know I had a firm offer but that job #2 is my first choice. Great position, great company, etc. But in all fairness to job #1, I need to make a decsion in the next few days so they can proceed with their process. Do they view me as a likely candidate? Could they do anything to speed up the process?

And then it is all a risk reward situation. You could pass on job #1 and hope for #2. You could accept job #1. You could even try an open conversation with job #1. (This is very high risk -- most employers would be insulted and wihdraw the offer but the rare few can be receptive to this sort of conversation. Remember: no one wants to ever be anyone's fall back.)

And it is beyond bad form to accept an offer and then rescind that. As an employer, I find that unforgivable. (I have already notified any other interested parties that they did not get the job and I have already let staff know who their new co-worker will be. I probably have to start a whole new search.)

That happened to me. I interviewed on a Friday, and was offered the job on Monday.

I didn't know much about the plant or industry, so I told them I would need to take a plant tour before accepting. I scheduled the plant tour 2 weeks later.

Meanwhile, I went on other interviews but they took too long to get back to me (I was anxious to leave my current job).

I accepted the job, and I love it. My salary is great, it's close to home (VERY important in Los Angeles), and my boss and coworkers are great people and very smart.

Well, you want to be safe or sorry? If you tell most employers you want to think about it, they'll prob. move on to the next candidate. There are so many looking now. What if the 2nd job doesn't happen? Take the first one put off the start date. Then if the other pulls thru take that instead.

Just tell the first job that you can't start until a few days. Then you can go to your 2nd interview and see how that works out. That way you have a choice, or at least you have weighed your options.

Companies will understand if you want some time to think about the offer. Telling the company YES and then pulling out if the other job come through is not a good idea, because you will probably "blacklisted" in the company.

Ask them if you can have two days to think about it. Then go to the other interview and see what happens.

if offer was made in writing, does it give a reply by / start date? anytime before then (and after the next i/view, and offer f possible!) would be good.

but if you feel the 1st job is good for you NOW, take it!

Tell them you appreciate their interest, but you need some time (1 or 2 weeks) for consideration, and will give them a definite answer by then.
