Go to the extras or watch the director's cut. The key to the film lies in the book that Grandma Death wrote, "The Philosophy of Time Travel". On the DVD, in the extras, there are about 6 or 7 pages from the book that describe what happens when something passes through a worm hole.(the jet engine, made of metal. Remember the conversation w/ Noah Wylie?) It explains how people are affected to varying degrees by their proximity to the time traveling object. It explains why the two bullies became more and more violent, why the gym teacher becomes more obsessive, etc. The director's cut actually puts some of these fact into the film itself.

I have watched Donnie Darko many times and each time I watch it I seem to find something else that I missed a time before. I think that the aspect of time travel is that Donnie had to set the events into motion to make things better for the people in his life. He brought up the idea that he was traveling within God's channel. So with that I think that it was a lesson to everyone that was close to Donnie. The reason I say this is because of how it ended with everyone waking from the dream crying or confused. Each person in the movie had an epiphany that they needed to make changes in their lives or else. Donnie was the maurder that died for their collective good. Donnie also had the choice to either follow the path and save them or refuse and let them die or face the consequences of their actions at least.

This movie had me so confused at the end.
But I think Donnie sees what will happen if he doesnt make a certain choice

I think that he got a glimpse of what his future would be if he didn't stay in bed that night of the jet engine...and after it was done that's when he was laughing in bed like a jackass...I think he had a choice....having people he loved killed..and ruining people's lives..or dying.. so he chose dying.
