The State of Texas has a surplus every year. As a way to give it back they have a Sales Tax Free Weekend the first weekend in August. Sales Tax is not charged on back to school items, clothes, shoes, etc. Some items over $100 are exempt and the tax is charged.

Once a year, usually right before school starts, stores have what you mentioned. " Tax free weekend"

But, it's a great thing because between school supplies, ( and some are limited ) and clothing, you can actually save some money, especially if you are buying for more than one child.
You can also buy adult clothing too !
I give it two thumbs up !!

we have tax free here in North Carolina twice a year. People need to buy school supples and new computers, so why not purchase them tax-free. Somehow, people think they are sticking it to the government. Many stores have huge turnouts, kinda like Thanksgiving. You can really get some great deals. Especailly on expensive electronics.
