We are trying to concieve. Any tips?

I was on ortho tri cyclen for approx 5 years. been on/off bc for a year. Stopped around dec/jan 06. I heard that you could become infertile by being on bc for too long. Is this true?

Please all and any tips are welcome and needed.
Please no smart remarks. (ex: sex)

I have never heard that birth control can make you infertile. I would hope that drs. would mention that before prescribing it as I imagine that many women who go on it want to get pregant at some point in their lives. I know I wouldn't have gone on it if there was even a remote possibility of it doing that (I'm going to have enough issues getting pregant anyway).

Anyway, it will most likely take a little longer (typically up to 6 months) for your cycles to regulate after coming off the pill since your hormones are having to get back to normal. This means that ovulation will have to regulate and it will likely take you longer to get pregnant than if you hadn't been on the pill. If you've been off b. control since the beginning of the year, your cycles should be regulated by now.

Ovulation typically takes place 12-16 days before your period (not necessarily on day 14, especially if you have longer cycles). It's recommended to have sex every other day starting around day 8-10 of your cycle (day 1 is the first day of your period) until around day 18 of your cycle (or later if you have longer cycles). You can also check your cervical mucus ("discharge") throughout your cycle and when it starts getting cloudy/lotiony/creamy, you are starting your fertile period . When it looks and feels like raw eggwhite, you are most fertile. This typically lasts for 1-5 days (but usually for 1-3). You could also start charting your basal body temps to determine when you're ovulating. Buy a basal body thermometer and take your temperature before you get out of bed in the mornings (and after 3 consecutive hours of sleep) and then chart it on a graph. If you use a site like fertilityfriend.com (free!), it will show when you've ovulated by placing a vertical line on that day. Your temp typically dips about half a degree when you're about to ovulate and then goes back up.

You can also register on www.mycycle.com and put in when the first day of your period is, how long your periods are, and how long your cycles are and it will determine when you're likely to ovulate.

www.babycenter.com also has a "pre-pregnancy" section that will give you tips.

"Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler is also a good book to read and will tell you everything you want to know!

Good luck!

No it is not true. I was on ortho tri cyclen for over 5yrs and went off of it when we decided to start trying for a baby..it took us 11 months to concieve but I do know it can take up too 6 months to get completely out of your system..and they don't recommend you trying to concieve a couple months after you stop bcp's anyways. Good Luck!!

No, you wouldn't become infertile from just taking the pill. I have known women to be on the pill for 10+ years before TTC. It can take up to one year before a healthy, fertile couple conceives a child. After a year, a fertility specialist is usually recommended.

Try asking your doctor. It all depends on the woman and her particular body. Many people can become infertile. My sister was on tri cyclen for about the same time you were----And she has two healthy boys !!

Good Luck!!

I don't think it can make you infertile, but it can certainly mess with your cycles which can mess up chances of getting pregnant.

it might take a while before you can get pregnant, just have a lot of sex about 2 weeks after your period
